March Madness in Tech Hiring: Mixed Signals

As we head into Q2, the tech job market is showing some signs of spring growth—but not without a few storm clouds on the horizon. March delivered a slightly improved unemployment rate in tech, down to 3.2% from 3.3%, hinting at subtle momentum in a sector that’s been cautiously navigating economic uncertainty.

Nationwide, more than 213,000 new tech job postings went live last month, signaling renewed interest in technical talent across industries. That’s a positive sign, especially when paired with regional growth in key tech hubs:

Denver saw a 5.6% increase in postings, reaching 3,864.

Dallas climbed 4.7%, now sitting at 9,630 openings.

While those numbers suggest expanding opportunities for job seekers, the broader economic context is a bit murkier. The U.S. added 228,000 jobs overall in March, but the national unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2%—a reminder that growth remains uneven.

Add to that the undercurrent of inflation, tariffs, and ongoing trade tensions, and it’s clear many employers and candidates are keeping a cautious eye on what’s ahead.

The tech sector often leads recoveries and slowdowns alike, so March’s job data offers a valuable—if slightly ambiguous—temperature check. We’re seeing solid demand for skills and a resilient job market, but questions around economic stability and geopolitical headwinds remain top of mind.
